Dear Troop 12 families, December 18, 2017 I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for a wonderful scout year in 2017. As adult advisors and committee members, we have watched the scouts grow over the past year, learning new skills, advancing in rank, experiencing new places, and hopefully making lifelong friends. Let me share a few reminders and new thoughts as we head into the winter break. First, attached to this letter are the 2018 Informed Consent/Roster Update and Contract. These forms need to be completed and returned during the first meeting of 2018 – January 8th. Please be as complete and legible as possible – even if the information has not changed. Along with the forms, dues for 2018 will be due at the January 8th meeting. The committee has voted to keep the 2018 dues at $120 for the year, despite the increase in national dues from $24 to $33. As the troop’s activities have not yet been finalized for 2018, any larger activity costs (Baltimore, Jambo, etc.) may necessitate a larger portion of the costs to be defrayed by those attending. We will have more details once the leadership retreat occurs in February. Second, three upcoming events to put on your calendars. January 12-14 is the annual Father-Son campout. Mom’s are welcome to fill in as well. This year we will be at Camp Minsi in the Wytrex cabin. The adults will have one side and the scouts the other. Indoor plumbing, running water, heat, and lots of games. Come and get to know the other parents and scouts. The Webelos will be joining us as well for the weekend. Money and signup will be at the meeting on January 8. January 29th will be the first court of honor of 2018. Along with the normal troop activities, there will be a Friends of Scouting presentation and a special award (see below). Finally, February 23-25 will be the annual leadership retreat. If your scout is holding a leadership position in the troop, please make every effort to have them available for this once a year planning event. Third, our current Committee Chair has indicated that she is looking to step aside. Please consider whether you would be interested in serving the scouts of the troop by leading the monthly committee meetings and signing off on Eagle Scout applications. Any questions regarding the duties can be directed to Anne-Marie or to me. It would be great to have this position filled before the January Court of Honor. Fourth, for those that indicated an interest in Philmont – it is official – Troop 12 has 2 crew reservations for Summer 2019. We will depart Saturday, June 22 and return Sunday, July 7. Plan to attend a parents/scout meeting on Monday, January 15, 2018. A $100 deposit will be required at that time. Finally, I would like to announce that Troop 12 will be awarding the first annual Vivek Ananthan Memorial Scout Spirit Recognition during the January Court of Honor. This recognition will be going to the scout showing the best spirit and guidance to the troop and younger scouts for the previous year. Troop 12 will be hosting a number of Alumni that night, so please be sure to plan to join us as we celebrate. On behalf of the other Advisors and Troop Committee, thank you again for a wonderful 2017, enjoy the holidays with family and friends, and be ready for an exciting 2018!! Yours in Scouting, Mr. Harman, Scoutmaster for Troop 12 |
